Winstrol is the brand name and trade name for the anabolic steroid , more officially and correctly known as stanozolol. It exists in both oral and injectable form and is the third most popular of the three most popular anabolic steroids among bodybuilders and athletes. It is only replaced by Deca-Durabolin.(Nandrolone Decanoate) in second place and Dianabol (Methandrostenolone) in first place. Winstrol is probably best known for its alleged use by Canadian Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, where he tested positive for it. However, its origins begin in 1959 when its details were first published in the medical and scientific community. It was Winthrop Laboratories in the UK that sold stanozolol to the prescription drug market, and Sterling in the US eventually bought the patent in 1961 for the US market where it was marketed under the brand name Winstrol.

Winstrol was approved for a wide range of medical treatments following its launch into the prescription drug market, ranging from tissue and muscle disorders to an osteoporosis drug, as well as for the treatment of burn victims and stunted children. However, Winstrol has not been very effective for the treatment of anaemia . The mechanism of action of Winstrol is quite brilliant in several ways. Its main action is through binding to the androgen receptor rather than mediating activity , which is typical of some other anabolic steroids such as Dianabol or Anadrol . Winstrol also has a low affinity for binding to glucocorticoid binding sites in addition to some activity that is independent of androgen receptors .
